Classy, informative, dramatic, moving, epic and written with style and panache. If youve ever had any interest in the age of discovery, Portuguese or Spanish history or just history in general, this is waiting to be brought down and savoured.
Feb 09, Erez Davidi added it. Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
Although he wasn’t alive to complete the entire journey himself after he was killed in a rather unnecessary battle with a local king in the Philippines, the expedition that he once led resulted in the first circumnavigation of the earth.
Magallanes: El hombre y su gesta by Stefan Zweig
Needless to say, the journey wasn Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Needless to say, the journey wasn’t smooth and clear skies all along otherwise there would hardly be a reason to write a full book about this expedition.
Magellan had to overcome the Portuguese king who tried to sabotage this voyage, the mutiny of his crew, hunger, thirst and very harsh weather. Oh, yeah, he also lost his life.
Zweig and his stirring prose style seem well suited for the task of writing about this dramatic expedition. Just consider this, for example: So much the better, now he was free. As so often when a man seems to be at the mercy of the winds, he is in reality being blown back upon his own self.
What drove them and why they acted the way they did. This shows in his biography of Magellan. He portrays him as a quiet introvert and as a very calculated man who rarely made any decision without considering the long term; he was also fairly zwei at least according to our standards todaybut yet very fair. Zweig doesn’t dwell too much into to the details of each and ztefan small thing that happened.
The first half of the book – in which Zweig describes Magellan’s earlier travels to the East and to Morocco, his choice to turn his back on Portugal, to go and serve the Spanish Crown – takes a bit of persistence to get through magaallanes is necessary to understand the historical context, I think.
Zweig writes repeatedly that it was Magellan’s dream, his Lebenszielto circumnavigate the globe. I went through Antonio Pigafetta’s account and found no evidence of it. Magellan wanted to find a passage through the Americas to reach the ocean on the other side, a way to reach the Spice Islands by sailing westwards.
But to continue from there in western direction to sail etefan to Spain? I doubt that that was ever the plan.
Still, this is a compelling account of the incredible hardships the sailors went through: A remarkable true story, and Zweig did an excellent job telling it. I really enjoyed this biography of Magellan, although the more recent biography by Laurence Bergreen is better.
Zweig, stffan was apparently a very stean writer in the s, has a gift for sweeping you up in the glory and occasional folly of Magellan’s great stecan. He fought mutiny, storms, seemingly impossible navigational difficulties, hunger, despair, locals who didn’t srefan being pushed around by Europeans, and the daunting magalanes unanticipated immensity of the Pacific Ocean itself, but the I really enjoyed this biography of Magellan, although the more recent biography by Laurence Bergreen is better.
He fought mutiny, storms, seemingly impossible navigational difficulties, hunger, despair, locals who didn’t like being pushed around by Europeans, and the daunting and unanticipated immensity of the Pacific Ocean itself, but the mission, despite beginning with nagallanes and five ships and ending with one ship and 18 men, was perhaps the greatest feat of Earth’s exploration ever accomplished. And Zweig does a good job of making this great story exciting. I did not actually read this edition of this book.
I listened to a French language audiobook version on Audible but I couldn’t find it on Goodreads. The reader of the audiobook was zweiy and spoke at a pace and with a clarity that made it easy steafn this non native French speaker to understand.
Ich war so knapp davor das Buch wegzulegen. Lesen ist ein muss! This short biography from Stefan Zweig is a wonderful recount of Magellan and his world’s first circumnavigation of the planet.
Fernando de Magallanes : El Hombre Y Su Gesta
The fruit of a lot of research and attempting to separate truth from fiction, magalanes is an enjoyable read as Zweig’s biographies always are. Good narrative of an awesome adventure. My only regret is that it’s too short and the book needs a map. Un grand Sweig bien plus coulant que La confusion des sentiments.
